How to Update your Xbox Series X Controller (Settings Tutorial)
1To update your Xbox Series X controller, you have a few options. Let’s explore them:
Wireless Update:
Most Xbox Wireless Controllers (except the original Xbox Wireless Controller) can be updated wirelessly without connecting a USB cable.
If your controller has a small, circular 3.5-mm port on the bottom, you can update it wirelessly.
Here’s how:
Plug in a stereo headset adapter if you have one.
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Navigate to Profile & system - Settings - Devices & connections - Controllers & headsets.
Select the controller you want to update.
On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select the three dots (“…”) to check the firmware version.
If it says “Update,” follow the provided steps to complete the update.
Keep in mind:
If you plugged your stereo headset adapter into the controller during a system update or while the console was off, the auto-detect feature may not work immediately. To fix this, unplug and re-plug the adapter.
You only need to update your controller once to use the stereo headset adapter. If you plan to use the adapter with other Xbox controllers, repeat the process for each controller.
Check for new updates periodically, as Xbox frequently ships new controller features and improvements.
USB Update:
If you prefer a wired update, follow these steps:
Plug the stereo headset adapter into the bottom of your controller.
Connect the included USB cable to your Xbox’s USB port (locations vary based on the console model).
Plug the other end of the USB cable into the top of the controller.
Instructions for installing the update should appear automatically.
Do not disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress.
The process may take up to 3 minutes.
