Infinity Reference Two Speaker Rebuild (new woofers, tweeters and capacitors!)
Full rebuild of my 90's Infinity Reference Two's as one woofer and one tweeter were blown and the capacitors are so old I figured I should replace them while changing the drivers. I did replace 6 ohm speakers with 8 ohm but I also upped the tweeter capacitor from 3.5uF to 4uF so this should bring the crossover cut-off frequency back down a little to compensate for the impedance change. I also had to use two 8uF in place of a 16uF as the 16uF non-polarized 100v was a little harder to find. I guess it worked okay as I'd say they sound as good as new and hopefully are good for another 30+ years!
The price of the drivers (two woofers, two tweeters), shipping UPS from the USA, duty and the capacitors did come up to $300 and tbh for $300 I could have bought brand new speakers that sound just as good as these BUT these are the perfect size for the stands I have them on and I like the way they look and didn't want to see them go to waste. Parts Express has a good selection of drivers and speaker components and if you live in the USA you'll get free shipping on orders over $100. The shipping via UPS to Canada was very expensive but that said I've seen these and similar speakers on Amazon.ca for almost twice the price of Parts Express. Meaning that or me the price was similar even with the expensive shipping as it would have been ordering the same or similar speakers on Amazon and Parts Express has a bigger selection of Dayton Audio products and better options for audio grade capacitors and full crossover kits.
