InfluxDB, Chronograf, & Telegraf - Installing and Setting Up | Time Series & DevOps
141InfluxDB is a time-series database similar to Prometheus or Graphite that stores data, usually numeric and or performance data.
Telegraf is a server agent (daemon) that scrapes data from various inputs and forwards them to various outputs. In this case, Telegraf is gathering metrics about a host system and sending them to InfluxDB
Chronograf is a web-based UI with built-in visualization and graphing/charting tools, very similar to Grafana with dashboards but can also handle the administration of InfluxDB itself.
Kapacitor is not included in this video but it is the data processing and eventing engine for the TICK stack. It's usually used for alerting but you can do some interesting things around heuristics with it.
The entire TICK stack is similar to the offerings from Datadog, however, it is orders of magnitude cheaper, especially considering it is fully open-source and extremely easy to set up yourself.
Overall, this video is shorter than I was anticipating, largely due to the developer-friendly nature of InfluxDB. I decided to keep things out of the terminals to make the content of the video as relatable as possible.
If there's enough interest, I can explore InfluxDB and the Tick stack further and look at how to configure Telegraf to capture more metrics (for example, from ElasticSearch) or how to secure Chronograf.
