Insta360 ONE R 1 Inch Edition - Having Seen The Initial Footage I don't Think I'll Buy one Just Yet
So, after watching the initial footage released after Insta360 lifted the embargo on the video footage for the Insta360 One R 1 Inch Edition, I wasn't particular impressed with the results, or couldn't immediately see any great benefits compared to the GoPro Hero8 Black or the DJI Osmo Action.
While, as expected, the 360 footage looked very impressive, although not a million miles away from the Insta360 One X. I was quite deflated to see the typical results from the 4K Sensor Module, 1 Inch Sensor Module and the audio results from the USB mic adapter, of which I could only find one example.
As mentioned in the video, here's some links to a few of the video examples I mentioned.
This first video is quite conspicuous due to the lack of 4K stream, which is a bit odd seeing as it was showcasing the 1 Inch Edition Sensor Module which records in 5.3K. Plus this footage is playing back in 25FPS, which is a frame rate that I thought the modules didn't record in yet, maybe I'm wrong? Check the Stats For Nerds function in the YouTube player, this will give you info about the video and stream information.

This video is the only one I could find so far demonstrating the external microphone input for the Insta360 One R. This example is far too short to be of any use to anyone wanting to guague the quality of the interface and the test conditions are also of no use for subjective listening.

Here's the first video by DC Rainmaker. While this is more of his first impression and quick test, he's at least very honest about his initial use and does mention the very important information of how stabilisation is achieved with the Insta360 One R with the 1 Inch Sensor Module.

While the 4K Module and 1 Inch Module are far from terrible and do look good. I'd have to say that on balance, there's isn't anything in there so far that would suggest that either are better than than the Hero8 or osmo Action. The Insta360 One R with the 1 Inch Sensor Module does look sharp but on balance I don't think it is as good as the Hero8, given practical functions like in built stabilisation, close focus and FOV.
I wouldn't completely rule out buying one at some point but for now I'm not convinced by what I've seen that any combination of the One R is better than what's already available, specifically for vlogging.
Action shooting may well be a different story?
What do you think?
Cheers,
Dave.
