Intel REVOLUTIONIZES Upsampling - Intel XeSS & Alchemist GPU Architecture Analysis
Intel's high performance graphics solutions are here - well, almost. Intel has divulged key details for it's Intel ARC Alchemist GPUs, including their AI machine learning solution - XESS. XeSS (XE Super Sampling) is very similar in method to DLSS, albeit it doesn't run on Tensor cores, but instead on Intel's own ARC GPUs such as Alchemist, it uses special instructions. But XESS can also run on competitor GPUs such as AMD Radeon and Nvidia GeForce, but it will take slightly longer per frame for the AI upsampling to be achieved.
This is a very interesting situation in graphics - because whilst AMD's FSR has very low requirements and very easy to implement, unlike XeSS or DLSS it doesn't use machine learning / motion vectors and so in theory, in finer details in motion, Intel and Nvidia's solution will have an advantage. XESS's success though will heavily depend on marketing, and Intel seem to be pushing a lot of marketing dollars behind Intel XE HPG GPUs.
Intel has also outlined the basics of its GPUs, with Alchemist supporting hardware based ray tracing, Mesh Shaders, VRS, and sampler feedback (basically all DX12 ultimate / DX12_2 functionality). Intel are building their GPUs similar to either Nvidia or AMD, with muiltiple blocks coming together to create a more powerful GPU. Intel Alchemist GPUs will feature HW based ray tracing capable of intersection testing and other such tasks, although we currently don't have a huge run down as to the GPUs performance.
Intel has also confirmed that HPG Alchemist will be created on TSMC's 6nm process, and we should see the GPUs hit clock speeds over 2GHz. Just as importantly, Intel has told us that their drivers will support recording of gameplay, live streaming, updated UIs, and even overclocking and tweaking features.
Intel's Alchemist GPUs will be in laptops, desktops and cover a wide range of performance targets - and we're going to see them launch likely Q1 2022.
