Investigating the Tower | Information Overload from the Past! - NieR: Automata
We're finally getting to see what's inside the Tower, after so much struggle, so much loss, and so much pain. And now, having come this far, I have just one thing to say.
"You don't need to know the first NieR for this game." - Bull. Shit.
This episode alone - as limited in progress as it actually was - was a HUGE info dump that was LOADED with direct references to the first NieR! All of the Gestalt Reports we read are literally about the events leading up to and during NieR Gestalt, as well as Drakengard. On top of the Iron Pipe, we have two ADDITIONAL flat-out mentions of freaking Yonah! YONAH! Nier's goddamn daughter, and the entire driving force behind his actions and the progression of the game.
And on top of all that, we have a perfect recreation of the very Library from NieR Gestalt, where you most likely will have spent most of your time in that game. Popola's office is still there, her non-vocals Song of the Ancients theme (seriously, you can sing along with the vocals if you listen closely), and even her trophy room... with all the boss trophies from THIS game there now!
Though I can't talk much. My playthrough has been full of info dumps, with constant insertions of cutscenes from NieR Gestalt for relevant context. And now I've gone a step further and added a scene from Drakengard, to show the direct event that led to NieR Gestalt's timeline.
I really wanna know WHAT the machines are doing with not only a recreation of that iconic structure, but also why they have all of those very specific records, and how they got them. How much do they truly know?
Also, I don't know if you noticed, but in the Tower, the path 9S takes has him doing nothing but physical combat, despite the fact that he's primarily a hacker. Then we have A2 - a combat model - going down a path that involves absolutely no combat, and instead just nothing but hacking. It's so poetic that it HAS to be deliberate.
Also, speaking of Popola and Devola, I'm so glad that I got to at least see them again. Since the trophy said it was their final moments, but they're STILL alive, and I haven't SEEN them die, I'm not gonna count them as dying. For the sake of my sanity, I can't afford to. This episode especially has been dedicated to fucking with me... and anyone who plays this part. Even if you haven't played the original NieR - and wouldn't get the reference with Yonah and the Library - having to encounter and fight all those 2B models is stil really messed up. It's downright cruel.
I mean... now 9S gets to have a part of 2B with him at all times, but in the most twisted way. Up until now, 9S has just been... simmering. He was a different character in his underlying demeanor, but you could still see him in there. But after being conronted by 2B... he really boiled over.
But, strange as it may seem, that anger he showed when he saw the 2B models... that anger seemed to come from... somewhere else.
It reminds me of the talk Adam had with 9S, when he said to 9S that he had hatred inside of him, and went on telling 9S all of the things that he (9S) wanted to do.
The game hasn't censoed a single curse word, so what did Adam mean when he said "You're thinking about how much you want to **** 2B."?
... anyway, what more bullshit lies in wait to compltely fuck with 9S? We're niering the end, so I WANNA say there can't be much more to mess with his psyche, but we all know not to underestimate Yoko Taro's powers.
When will we meet the source of that voice we keep hearing..?
