A detailed review of Art Of Rally in about 3 minutes! We make game reviews without the fluff.

I love abit of rally, but before I played through Arty Of Rally if someone had asked me if i'd be interested in a low poly, birds eye view rally game full of bright colors and unlicensed cars while being forced to listen to an endless stream of 80's inspired synthwave I would probably have said no, but i'm glad nobody did ask me, because the guys at FunSelectorLabs have somehow managed to capture the thrill and the essence of rally then wrapped it up in a gorgeous candyfloss world and it just... Works.

First off I was surprised by how many cars are included in the game. There's over 50 iconic cars with cleverly edited names presumably to avoid the hassle of getting all of the official licenses. For example there's the 'Turbo Brick' also known as the Volvo 242 rally, there's the 'Cozzie SR2' aka the Ford RS200 and 'the meanie' instead of mini.

There's over 60 different stages too covering the woods of Finland, the snowy roads of Norway, Germany, Japan and a little place called Sardinia which is actually an Italian island in the Meditteranean sea and NOT a land full of sardine fish people like I originally suspected. Now fair enough some of those stages are just reversed versions of the same track but that's still an impressive amount of content!

You drive from an external camera hovering quite far above the car and just like in real rally your goal is to finish the stage as quickly as possible to beat your opponents. There's a campaign which walks you through the history of rally by getting you to race through the ages starting in the 1960's and finishing in the mid 90's. Modern WRC cars aren't a part of the game which is abit of a shame but possibly something that'll be added in the future since the devs are still actively developing new cars and content for the game.

The handling leans more towards simulation than arcade and the cars feels weighty and realistic and each one has their own unique handling charactistics which adds some much appreciated challenge to each car without being overly difficult regardless if you decide to play with a keyboard, gamepad and racing wheels.

I started out using my keyboard, then switched up to an xbox gamepad and finally decided to try it on my thrustmaster ts-pc racing wheel and I didn't have any trouble getting a good feel on any of them though I eventually landed on the gamepad since i'm not a fan of racing with a wheel from outside the cockpit.

Sound-wise there's only 2 sounds you need to hear. The engine and the awesome synthwave tracklist that reminded me of when I was a kid playing SEGA Rally and Rally Championship on my mum's PC. It would've been really easy to just give all the cars the same generic engine sounds but they didn't, each car has its own unique and gritty sound which shows the love these guys put into the game at every turn.

Overall it's a really good game and it's definately an experience worth having for any rally or racing fan even if on the surface it isn't the type of game you'd usually go for. The visuals are lush and vivid, there's a huge selection of cars and tracks and a lengthy campaign that you can replay as many times as you like, aswell as custom races and daily and weekly online events.

It hits that sweet spot of being easy to pick up but hard to master and it's a definate recommendation from us even at its full price of 21 euros on Steam.
