IS IT WORTH IT?! | A Review of Dirt Rally 2.0 in About 3 Minutes!

As a huge fan of the original Dirt Rally I was initially pretty dissapointed when I got my hands on Dirt Rally 2.0 when it came out back in 2019. Alot of the cars and tracks from the first game were missing and it felt like all the cars had rear wheel steering, plus the lack of VR support at launch caused chaos in the community, and after I saw many people complaining about the same things as me I eventually just gave up and went back to the first game in the series until about a year later...
Now though with over 50 cars and rallys in a wide variety of locations from around the world including New Zealand, Argentina, Sweden and my personal favorite - Wales, plus VR support for people unlike me who don't throw up almost instantly, Dirt Rally 2.0 is by far the best modern rally simulator and easily qualifies as one of the most immersive racing experiences you can have on PC.
On that note though if you're going to get it, you should get the Game Of The Year Edition which includes all available content as alot of the fan favorite cars and tracks from the first game came out after the base game as seperate DLC's.
Similar to the first Dirt Rally, the singleplayer career puts you up against increasingly challenging AI drivers across multiple stages and locations that make up the rally. You earn in-game cash based on your performance which you can use to upgrade your car to open up more tuning options or buy new and used cars from the market and they're all recreated in breathtaking detail even in 2021.
The career progression feels satisfying but challenging and you real feel like you earn each and every win without it ever feeling like a grind. As I mentioned earlier the AI difficulty increases as you continue to improve your performance in the career, starting off fairly easy and providing a real challenge by the end game.
The career was easily the highlight of the game for me personally but there's also online daily, weekly and monthly events and you can create custom online league events for friends and racing communitys to compete in, and thanks to the very active community you shouldn't expect any issues at all with finding content online.
It's got a fully licensed FIA World Rallycross career mode too if you're in to more than regular rally, but although I don't mind abit of rallycross from time to time, i'm happy to say that the game doesn't try to force any rallycross events on you if you'd rather stick to classic rallying instead.
Some of the cars you can drive include classics like the Lancia Delta, the Ford RS200 and Escort Cosworth aswell as modern options like the Peugeot 208 R2 and the Subaru WRX NR4 and they've done an excellent job making each one feel completely unique in everything from their handling charactistics to the incredible engine sounds.
The handling and force feedback on snow and tarmac is much improved over the first game and the introduction of stage degredation adds an extra level of difficulty to an already brutally challenging experience. One bad crash can end it all, so if you want to succeed you'd do well to remember the wise words of Phil Dunphy - Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!
Seriously though the tracks look breathtaking and the handling on all surfaces feels spot on. You really feel the surface change as you go from dry tarmac to a patch of ice mid corner and your wheel suddenly gets lighter as you quickly try to adjust to avoid rapidly redesigning your side door with the help of the wall.
To get the most out of the game you'll definately want to use a racing wheel with good force feedback like the G29 or Thrustmaster TS-PC but it actually feels great using a gamepad and I even had more fun than expected when I tested it with my keyboard!
The long and the short of it is like this. Dirt Rally 2.0 is nothing short of a masterpiece. If you're a racing sim fan then the chances are you're probably already playing it, but if it's your first time diving into the world of rally then this is an excellent place to start out. T
he developers have managed to create a game so good that it'll be hard to beat in a future sequal, and with Codemasters now under the reigns of EA Games only time will tell if this will be the last truly great rally sim from the studio or if they'll manage to keep it together and wow us with Dirt Rally 3.0!
