In Bus Simulator 18 you start out as a solo bus driver who’s helping the small city of Seaside Valley expand their public transport network and over time you unlock more and more areas of the city and expand your business to include more buses and drivers. You’re able to run your bus company in singleplayer or multiplayer with up to 4 players, and surprisingly the online community is still very much active with multiple full public servers every time I checked.

There’s a few different types of buses to drive from 4 fully licensed bus brands including Mercedes-Benz, Setra, MAN, and IVECO and both the external and internal modeling looks really good. There’s 8 different buses in total including the MAN Lion’s City Bus and the Mercedes Citaro K aswell as a couple of articulated or bendy buses, but unfortunately there aren’t any doubledeckers which is abit of a shame, though I know that doubledeckers are coming in Bus Simulator 21 when it comes out later this year.

You can customize the colors, skins and ads on each bus using either the made up styles in-game or by looking for realistic skins on the integrated Steam Workshop where you can find skins for popular companies like Arriva, Stagecoach, Flexbus and so on.

Something really cool is that you can actually see all your buses driving around town with you while you’re on a route, so you go from being literally the only bus on the roads to a huge network of buses, each with their own unique routes and passengers.

Creating and managing your bus routes is quick and easy and you’re able to assign multiple drivers and buses to a single route to help handle increased passenger demand. There is a limit to how many buses can service a single bus stop before they stop being profitable, but ultimately you can have as many buses on each route as you want.

When creating a new route you’re often given a set of objectives to achieve in order to move on to the next phase of the campaign which usually includes having to connect the harbor area to the business park or the residential areas with the train station and so on. If you receive a message telling you that a bus stop is over-saturated, that means you have too many buses stopping at a certain stop and it will no longer be profitable, but the buses will still run if you want them to just without making you any extra money.

Speaking of money, every time you drive a route you earn a certain amount of money based on how many passengers used the service on that particular trip. Demand depends on the weather and the time of day, since you can drive both day and night. Sometimes you get a special holiday event where everyone’s off work and the amount of passengers waiting at each stop increases massively.

Once you complete a route your total profit for the trip is calculated and then extrapolated over the course of a week and added to the total pool of all your buses combined, so basically each route you drive is equivalent to a week’s worth of work for your company which does a good job at removing a lot of the potential grind.

The map feels abit small with a central cluster of buildings and a few outlying areas like the business park, industrial areas and a couple of small villages but it’s big enough to still give you the feel of driving in a small town so overall it does the job though there were a couple of things that could definitely use abit of a face lift.

The city itself looks OK but the background details are, well they’re quite bad if I’m being completely honest. The map is lined with big triangular pointy mountains and most of the background scenery looks abit low res and it’s quite noticable since a lot of the background textures are visible even from the center of the city.

The design of the city itself also suffers from the same problem as a lot of driving sims. It all looks abit too clean and tidy! Everything looks shiny and brand new like the whole place was just built yesterday, and all the streets feel abit too wide and convenient for a keyboard wielding bus driver to be able to navigate safely… I know I know that makes it more accessible for players without loads of specialized controllers which is great, but at the same time it takes away some of the immersion for more hardcore drivers who want abit of a challenge.
