A detailed review of Train Sim World 2 in about 3 minutes! We make game reviews without the fluff! Subscribe for more!

Train Sim World 2, much like it’s very close relative the Train Simulator 20 series, is all about operating a variety of different trains within a realistic and detailed simulation of the real world.

Out of the 2 games Train Sim World 2 offers a more user friendly interface, the ability to walk around on foot finding collectibles, detailed tutorials for every train and superior graphics thanks to the upgraded unreal engine 4.

In other words Train Sim World 2 offers a much more modern and accessible user experience that appeals to slightly more casual players who still want to enjoy a realistic and challenging simulation of driving a train without having to study manuals and guides just to figure out how to start the engine.

There’s 3 scenarios included in the base game and each one includes about 30 unique routes and a couple of different trains for a total of over 90 different journeys where you’ll be hauling both passengers and freight alike. Most journeys typically lasts between 20 minutes and an hour.

The scenarios include the Sand Patch Grade in the US, the German high speed passenger service and totally not butchered Schnellfahrstrecke Köln-Aachen, and the London underground. You’re free to pick and choose any of the routes yourself or you can progress through each chapter one mission at a time.

Every time you enter a train you haven’t driven before the game takes you through a short introduction to the controls and for the most part they cover everything you need to know but there were still occasions where I had to google something that wasn’t explained in the game.

You’re also able to get up out your chair and walk around both the train and stations, with invisible walls keeping you from wandering places the game doesn’t you to be. During freight shunting missions you’re often asked to couple and uncouple wagons on foot which involves getting out the train and manually unlocking the coupler. You can also find optional collectibles and scenarios dotted around each map while walking around.

It’s an extremely good looking game both inside and outside the cabin and the performance was good on my 1080ti with only scattered stutters here and there as it loaded in a new areas and assets.

Something worth noting is that I had to run the game at 200% render quality to remove the jagged edges and flickering overhead cables that the anti-aliasing seemed unable to fix on its own but I still got over 60fps on average even at 200% which means if you’re running an older PC then you might just have to live with slightly jagged edges in order to get a good fps.

You’re can operate trains using the interactive in-cab controls or with standardised keyboard shortcuts that are the same for each train. Everything from detailed start-up procedures to obeying signals and speed limits and even switching tracks is simulated and all part of your job as a virtual rail engineer.

For someone like me who has an interest in trains but is still a far cry from being a full on enthusiast, Train Sim World 2 really hit the spot. Everything I needed to know was easy enough to figure out without being over-simplified, and the game feels challenging and rewarding with a good feeling of progression all the way through. The world and everything in it is very well simulated and there’s plenty of content included in the base game to get keep you busy for many hours even if you only drive each route once.

I’ve noticed a few reviews where people mentioned experience bugs in the game but personally I didn’t come across any issues that didn’t later turn out to have been my own fault as a shoddy engineer.

At one point I thought the game had broken because the mission got stuck telling me to Please Wait, but as it turned out I’d just uncoupled the wrong wagons from the train and for whatever reason it seems the game isn’t programmed to tell you exactly what you did wrong, but once I realised my mistake the mission completed and I carried on as usual.

So although I didn’t notice any bugs, if I was to nitpick then it would be helpful to get a bit of extra polish on the objective tracker. VR support would also be a welcome addition to the game...

My one biggest concern with games like this is always the shockingly long list of expensive DLCs. I understand the financial reasons behind it but from a customer’s perspective being confronted with a list of 37 DLCs worth a total of over 800 euros can be abit daunting to say the least, though there’s enough content in each pack to last you atleast a few hours.
