Deep Rock Galactic lets you fulfill your life long dream of being a heavily armed dwarf miner in space who routinely gets sent deep below the surface in the most inhospitable places imaginable. The goal is to mine as many precious minerals as possible while trying not to die to large swarms of insanely aggressive insects together with your team of up to 3 other players and it's a freaking blast!
Think of it abit like Starship Troopers meets Left 4 Dead but with persistent character progression, an impressive amount of customization and 100% more bearded dwarves, then wrap it all up in a colorful but dark and immersive low-poly artstyle and you'll get the idea...
Anyway so the game involves going on missions that take from around 15-45 minutes depending on which mission you take and how thoroughly you explore the procedurally generated cave. The mission types vary from having to escort an automated mining drill as you fend off waves of insects to simple mining missions that task you with mining a certain type of mineral in order to fill your quota.
When you first arrive in a cave it's all dark and gives you a really convincing feeling of being in an unexplored enviroment so you've got to light the place up using little throwable flares to be able to see the nearby mineral veins and begin mining. Sometimes you've got to dig through cave walls to link up to an adjascent cavern or just to get from one place to another quickly.
The enemies scale based on the amount of players in the mission so you're easily able to play through missions solo although it's definately more fun in multiplayer which is made easy thanks to the very healthy and active online community.
There's 4 different classes to play - The scout, the engineer, the driller and the gunner and they're all vital in ensuring a successful dive. They all have their own unique playstyles, weapons and abilities too which you can improve as your character level increases.
It really pays to thoroughly explore each mission since the more minerals you mine directly translates to more XP earned at the end of the match. You also have a chance to find a loot crate that contains a cosmetic item for your character.
Once a character reaches level 25 you're able to promote them which gives you access to deep dives and the forge. Deep dives are basically 3 regular missions combined into a big long mission lasting around 45 minutes to an hour and they give special rewards called matrix cores that let you craft weapon mods and cosmetics that can change the look and feel of your character drastically.
Something I'm too keen on is that the missions are locally hosted which means that if the party leader quits during a mission then the whole party gets kicked which only happened to me 2 or 3 times, but it's something I think could be done abit better, perhaps transferring the party leader role to a remaining member so the mission can go on instead.
Overall though it's a truly awesome game with alot to offer for both casual and hardcore players. The sound effects and music are top notch and together with the vibrant low-poly graphics it does a great job creating a tense but beautiful atmosphere underground.
The combat feels rock solid and insanely satisfying and something about fending off swarms of hundreds of insects just never gets old. I also didn't come across any major bugs during my 66 hours playtime.
There are some DLC's for the game but they're strictly cosmetic only and have no impact on the gameplay itself other than distracting people by looking like a badass.
I've had an absolute blast playing this and we definately recommend it if you're in to FPS and exploration games or you're just looking for a fun game to play with friends or random people online.
