The year is 1850 and all you've got is a tiny bit of starting capitol and a dream of becoming a transport mogul, but by starting small and slowly expanding over time, making sure your vehicles are in good condition and your production lines are running at peak efficiency, you can hopefully bring that dream to life as you advance through the ages to the present day.
Graphically speaking it's incredible! It's been about 2 and a half years since the game came out and it still looks mind blowingly good. Every blade of grass looks lush and animated, the random people walking along the sidewalk look vibrant and alive and the detailing on the vehicle models is absolutely breathtaking!
What's more is that every person you see walking around or riding on one of your trains or buses actually has somewhere they need to be. They have a house, they have a job and they go shopping. Each map feels like a truly immersive and believable world with alot more to offer than just connecting cities and factories to make money.
When I first started playing I quickly discovered that making money is surprisingly challenging especially when you're not familiar with the UI and how the supply and demand system works.
Thankfully though the in-game tooltips combined with the first few levels of the fully voice acted campaign which doubles as a slightly vague tutorial did a good job at answering most of my questions.
Money is a constant factor even in the late stages of the game though. Vehicles cost millions of dollars to buy, especially trains and the larger ships and planes, and every line needs to be bring in enough income to cover the purchase price and maintanence costs.
What's more is that just like in real life, vehicles get old and need to be replaced after a few decades, you can even see rust appear on ageing vehicles. Throughout the game your business never stops expanding and you have to keep an eye on all your routes and make small adjustments to keep things running smoothly, which goes a long way in keeping the gameplay fresh and interesting ever after spending hours on a single map.
Speaking of the maps, they're procedurally generated and you can customize the amount of cities, industries, hills and waterways to get it set up how you like and make sure each new game feels completely unique.
Each city demands 2 randomly selected resources that stay the same throughout the game, but the amount of each resource they need increases massively as the city grows, typically starting out as a mid 1800's village and potentially becoming a sprawling urban metropolis by the mid 2000's if you supply it with everything it needs.
Everything from the supply of goods to vehicle emissions is simulated and has either a positive or negative effect on the growth of the town.
There's over 200 different vehicles in the game including trams, buses, ships, planes, trains and automobiles from Asia, Europe and the USA.
You can select vehicles from just one or all regions at the start of a new game depending on if you prefer playing with maximum choice or an accurate availability of vehicles from each part of the world. There's also hundreds of free user made vehicles, maps and assets available through the integrated Steam Workshop.
Overall Transport Fever 2 sets a new standard in the genre on practically all fronts. The graphics are amazing, the sound design is excellent with the sort of catchy background music that you only hear if you listen to it and the challenging yet highly replayable gameplay is very enjoyable without ever feeling dull or repetitive, thanks to the many vehicle unlocks and the constant challenges of expansion and managing your existing routes.
