Kenseiden is a demon-infested romp through what could be perceived as non-feudal Japan (it was originally a land of peace), and it's one of those titles you may have to reflect on. Is the glass half empty or half full? Kenseiden is not particularly amazing in its execution and handles a bit stiff, but it's hard to not be entertained by a samurai badass (or perhaps more like a Rōnin) with the blood of the Dragon King in his veins.

As Hayato, you are going across the country to destroy demons and defeat evil Warlocks who stole the "Sword of the Dragon King" and the "Five Secret Scrolls". Unless Hayato can recover these goods, the land will be doomed and plagued by centuries of evil and terror. The game has some light adventure elements to it and Hayato can gain new abilities and stronger attacks over time, if he finds them (which is why you can backtrack to older levels). Some enemies are unjustly hard due to the game's mechanics and constant respawning of greater annoyances, but very few pose a threat so great that you'd cringe. The game has quite a few levels and is one of the longer SMS sidescrollers, so it might have benefitted from a password system of some kind. A decent game in its entirety, but there are better SMS games. Enjoy.
