Kerbal Space Program (kOS) - Redirecting eggstremely large comets using swarm control
This is my first milestone of a feasability test I'm running for how to deal with re-directing the gargantuan (Class H and I)
comets. This particular comet is a 308,000 ton class H as I haven't been able to track down a class I yet.
The idea, generally, is to use swarm control to convert a Gargantuan comet into an eggship (see my video history for previous eggs). This allows the comet to thrust in any direction without controlling the direction of the comet.
This method is designed to negate a couple of the biggest issues with moving these around: Accidental roll because of tiny center of mass offsets, and the general difficulty of keeping things pointed in the right direction because of the sheer size and mass that must be turned.
I wrote the kOS code for the drones to use the main engines for what would typically be RCS type maneuvers simply because the part count was getting up there and I can drop a ton of part count skipping the RCS.
It does seem to work, though I now have some ideas to improve it and deal with some kraken problems. Still, I figured it was interesting enough to warrant a post as is.
