In the DS games, bosses don't have HP Gates or phases, instead each phase is treated as it's own boss fight(Probably due to system limitations). We saw this with Darkside and Pete but each phase with Darkside was like its own boss fight. In the case of Riku and Pete, each phase is like an actual phase they go through as their health drops. You normally get a checkpoint at every phase which is not normal for KH bosses so I try to do every phase in one go so I don't have the music resetting every time and to make it more interesting.

This is probably the best fight in the game. A lot of the fight revolves around distance and positioning. Basically, just wait for his first attack, guard it, and then counter back with a combo. My entire setup is designed to make sure my combos finish and that they finish in a specific way. I am not just using Kingdom Key for style, I honestly found it to be the most useful keyblade for this fight. I needed a keyblade that had no Combo Arts and didn't have Attack Haste because both ruined the flow of my combos. Only keyblades that fit were Kingdom Key and Lady Luck and KK had an Attack Upgrade ability while LL had nothing to increase damage so I went KK.

I also equipped a single Combo Plus. Riku gains super armor after 3 hits and if your finisher is the third hit he gets launched away and might attack before you can recover. By having a 4 hit combo, he gains super armor before the finisher and will thus will super armor through the finisher and be standing right in front of you when he finishes staggering. Riku will never directly attack after he staggers if he is right in front of you so he will either jump back before attacking or he will shield. Both options are clearly telegraphed and shouldn't catch you by surprise. If he shields, you just run behind him and get a free combo off. If he jumps back, he will either do a jump slash or a 2-hit slash, both of which you can block and get a combo after. The jump slash is the main reason I didn't want Attack Haste because it has a ton of recoil when you block so you need to space out your attacks so your thrust can reach him. Some times your attack won't properly connect and he will jump back. Just block his attack afterwords and continue like normal if this happens.

If Riku gets too close to the sides of the area, he will teleport away after a combo. Don't worry about this hitting you, he will teleport to the center of the arena and do a downward thrust that shouldn't be anywhere near you. After this just stay a specific distance from him and guard when he attacks.

Second phase gives him a new attack. He will now sometimes just teleport out of nowhere and down-thrust you from above. The attack creates a shockwave sending out a circle of Blox. When he does this, just move a bit out of the way and guard. Yes, you can in fact guard Danger Bloxs when they are a projectile from an enemy. Immediately, after guarding it, roll towards him to get within that distance for him to attack physically. Something to note is that Riku will never do this attack if he immediately teleports when next to the wall. If he teleports right after a combo without jumping back, he is just teleporting to get away from the wall like I mention before.

In the third phase he gains his DM, Dark Aura. I highly recommend getting the Armor Bangle from an optional System Sector on Destiny Islands. This accessory gives you the ability to block attacks from any side, not just the front. This makes avoiding Dark Aura much much easier. It is still very much possible to dodge Dark Aura with Dodge Roll but it's much harder. After 5 dashes, quickly jump and Air Slide away to avoid the shockwave. Note that he doesn't dash at startup after levitating into the air, his first attack will be after the teleport.

This is being played on the DeSmuME emulator. I don't have a DS/3DS capture card nor do I have the funds to get one. I am also using a high resolution 3D renderer at X3 setting to make the footage much cleaner.
