There are a number of very aggressive decks in Hearthstone whose entire strategy is burning you down quickly with direct damage and a flood of minions. They use a lot of charge minions and burn spells to attack your face directly as well as weapons and rush minions. Unless you can take and hold the board early, you’re in serious danger of being overwhelmed and not even board clears are a sure-fire way to regain initiative, as your foe will typically flood the board immediately afterwards. Healing can certainly help turn the tide in your favour as can being even more aggressive than your opponent. Heavy control decks often have enough board clears to keep aggression in check, but there’s one more way to protect your face that you’ll likely see in nearly every deck you play against: Taunt.

Taunt minions prevent your opponent from going face with their minions and weapons, forcing them to trade. They don’t stop direct burn spells but a smattering of them can make all the difference, especially if the taunt is coupled with a healing effect. They’re typically not well stated for their cost but the amount of damage you can avoid taking to your face often makes for a fair exchange, provided you can capitalise on the breathing room they give you. What if you took the idea of protecting yourself with taunts to its logical extreme, filling your entire deck with taunts and things that synergise with taunt? The answer is you’d end up with this, a deck that aims to shut down aggressive decks with taunt after taunt after taunt. It also contains ways to buff said taunts, mitigating their weak stats somewhat. Is a never-ending sea of taunts enough to prevail, especially against slower decks that slowly amass their win condition? Let’s find out.
