76It doesn’t matter if you’re in the most remote parts of the countryside, the darkest depths of the earth or another plane of existence entirely, there’s always something going on that only a group of adventurers can solve. This makes sense in some instances, as there are many problems that are far beyond the ability of the local law to handle; wolves attacking livestock during the night is something a village militia can candle, but not a group of aggressive gnolls. A town could easily dispatch people to take care of gnolls, but might have a problem with an ancient crypt unearthed in the latest sewer expansion which is full of mummies. Such problems are the bread and butter for Terri and her party, bringing in coin and renown.
The Underdark is much like everywhere else in that regard save that the problems have to be very dangerous for the local populace to be unable to handle them. Surviving in the Underdark is no easy feat and those that call it their home quickly learn to be resourceful, observant and strong enough to protect what small niche of the vast cavern system they’ve carved out for themselves from those that would take it for their own. When they have an problem and are looking for adventurers to solve it, the only thing you can be sure of is that dealing with the issue is going to be a challenge unlike any other, not to mention twice as deadly on average.
