It’s time for us to tentatively explore the Underdark, which is a lot easier said than done considering how dark it is. The game doesn’t accurately depict it, but this place typically has no light in it whatsoever. This makes exploring with light sources very dangerous as potential foes will see you coming from a long distance. It’s little wonder that the people who thrive the best in the Underdark have darkvision, seeing their subterranean home only in shades of grey which I imagine would make it look quite stunning.

While we’ve met a handful of people willing to talk to us, many more will not think twice about engaging us in combat. This is doubly true for the drow who will look at our party and see either a nuisance to be eradicated or future slaves to be captured. It’s triply true for any ilithid we encounter too who, in addition to the two things I just mentioned, might want to consume our brains as a snack. Then there’s all the other equally nasty monsters that could very well be lurking in the shadowy corners of the caves, waiting to strike for when the party is most vulnerable.

Have I managed to get across just how dangerous the Underdark is yet? If not, just know that it’s even more dangerous than Candlekeep in the prologue of Baldur’s Gate when you’re a level 1 wizard with 2 hit points.
