Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix 100% Part 13 - Olympus Coliseum [2/2]: Hydra
We continue where we left off in Olympus Coliseum by going to rescue Megara and recovering the Olympus Stone from whoever stole it.
Once you get to the Atrium, Organization member Demyx; who’s just kinda here to collect a paycheck if we’re being honest, is revealed to be the thief and a battle ensues. You don’t really battle him, he just summons a bunch of water clones and the clones go down pretty easily, you can whack them and a QTE prompt will pop up to use an AOE with the water clone, keep doing this until all the clones are dead and Demyx will just go away.
In Final Mix, there’s a textbox cutscene added where Demyx comes back and tells Sora about the Absent Silhouettes, which is basically an excuse to battle the Organization members from Chain of Memories with Kingdom Hearts 2 gameplay and different boss movesets, you can battle Zexion now for instance but if you do it now you’re most likely gonna get wrecked.
You can completely cheese Pete using the recently acquired Chicken Little summon, and it’s kinda funny how trivial the battle becomes, but I decided to do it without the summon mainly just for fun and to show how the battle would be done without it. Pete has an assortment of gags and tricks up his sleeves, but he’s not too much to handle. One thing I discovered recently is you can hit Pete once and he’ll just use his invincibility shield, which you can do throughout the first part of the battle until the second part comes up. In the second part, Herc shows up and the battle and the battle becomes a lot more one-sided since his shield can be broken with a QTE with Sora and Hercules.
As far as I can say about Pete, he gives Sora and the gang plenty of crap throughout the game so I’d say that he makes a good recurring villain, which is something that I feel Maleficent lacked in the original game and even more so in this game, in fact she’s just kinda there in this one, all talk and no action and spoiler alert: she gets worse in this regard as the series continues.
With Pete taken care of and Meg saved, that just leaves the Hydra which Herc neglected to finish. The Hydra is a pretty fun battle, a tip I have at the start of the battle is to use Trinity Limit at the start of the battle to progress without having to wait for the Hydra’s head to come down. Once that’s done, you gotta do a tag-team QTE with Phil to chuck an urn at the Hydra to stun it, I like to position myself before I do the Vanquish RC so that I’m closer to another head each time one Vanquish is finished, if you don’t get on the Hydra’s back then Phil will keep yelling “Get up on the Hydra’s back!” until you do as he says.
After you vanquish all three head, the Hydra grows back a couple more heads and is a little more aggressive, I find standing to one of the sides of the back of the arena helps avoid most of his head-bash attacks. What I don't show off is that there's a QTE where you ride atop Pegasus to press Triangle a couple times to damage the Hydra, as by the time the prompt could the Hydra was already dead due to Trinity Limit.
