16Kingsley's Adventure is a fairly late PS1 game from 1999 that has ended up a bit of a cult classic in modern times, as you can imagine it sunk without a trace on release. Fair to say when compared against titles like Crash Bandicoot 3 and Spyro the Dragon from 1998, Kingsley just didn't stand a chance.
Tank controls, hit and miss platforming, far from perfect camera angles, weapons with next to no range, finally a very limited area for using actions prompts and talking to NPCs. Added to all that, the game has an odd mix of RPG style live action hack and slash platforming with an arcade life system. Making for a game you could easily write off in 30 seconds and one you do need some patience with.
Once you get into Kingsley's Adventure the game has a huge amount of charm, from the art style and character design to the music. Kingsley's won't win awards in any area, but it's a solid game and a nice alternative to PlayStation fans who want a Zelda game. Had this been released early in the PS1's life it would likely have become a big series, but it came too late and looked to dated on release. Sony really should give Kingsley a second shot in the world of gaming as a few adjustments to the format could easily make this a title to rival the Zelda series. At the very least his game deserves a long overdue re-release.
