Now that I've decided upon a favorite stage for the Dyna Blade sub-game, no doubt each subsequent one will give me its best case for why I've made a grave error in judgment. But no! I will not falter, even as untold amusement awaits as we continue our exciting journey of whimsy and wonder to... uh... wait, weren't we supposed to save something or someone from... something... and... the food?!

Yeah! Food. Let's go pick up all the pieces of food mysteriously lying and floating around. Sounds like a good plan. Eventually we'll reach someplace... and... do something. That'll fix... whatever we were supposed to be doing instead of having all this fun! Nobody said we can't have both!

Dyna Blade, Stage 3: Cocoa Cave

And now we encounter our first stage with a really strong emphasis on combat. No real tricks or traps or even anything particularly sneaky, just a lot of enemies in cramped spaces between where you start and where you need to end up. Of course, the accompanying stage theme is more than sufficiently energized to such an end!

To this end, you might recall that I elected to go with something that packs a bit more oomph than normal at the end of the previous segment... and I was SO looking forward to the chance to grab a Ninja ability for myself, but there will be plenty of chances for that later.

No, no, in this case, I believe Plasma to be a more appropriate choice, although this being Kirby, there's really not often that there's a particularly "wrong" choice to be made, particularly with two players at hand and abilities being changed out on a whim every which way whenever we want.

Anyway, Plasma is a pretty simple ability at its core. You build up static electricity by fidgeting about on the control pad, and you release the pent-up charge all at once by pressing the attack button. Very simple, yes... but the increased damage and effectiveness at higher charge levels are particularly considerable.

A good strategy (as well as a humdinger of a defense) is to block while furiously jamming on the movement controls, thus keeping you stationary and in under control AND building up your static charge to the maximum, creating a huge aura of electricity to defend you against weak attacks and enemies. Just... be sure you keep in mind how far it extends and that it won't actually kill most standard enemies, so if you try to get reckless with it as an offensive tool, things will slip through its protective barrier. The consequences could end up being most unfortunate. (...I can't imagine why I'd ever need to point that out.)

Stone is another really strong ability of simple execution and obvious applications, although I will point out that my complexity addiction prevents me from using it much longer than its obvious applications within a stage's design.

Oh, and look how quickly Rocky will actually move if you actually light a fire under his feet. I knew he was just dragging his heels all this time! Still, who wouldn't want to have a robotic one-armed (I think?) yo-yo machine for a buddy? I most adamantly approve!

Who would've thought that amidst all the incredible powerful ability exchanges that Ice would be the most forgettable... and we cap it all off with an encounter with another rare and powerful force to be reckoned with, Bugzzy! Basically a souped-up take on Kirby's suction powers, Suplex is pretty fantastic in terms of both spectacle and power, so it's no wonder that both players would want a sample of it.

Incidentally, this is the other case where the ability-bearing miniboss version is literally the only enemy in the game to grant access to one of Kirby's many varied power sets, and so the Helper for Suplex is the extra large Bugzzy. I don't think his size is particularly much an asset like it can be for Bonkers, but Bugzzy definitely looks really cool.
