Some of you may remember a series I did back in 2013 called Cheapo Space Program. This is a variation on that same theme.
It's a Space Race between a poorer country with a head start in space (the Union of Korpulent Kerbal Republics) and a rich country that is starting to catch up. Our poorer country caught the richer one napping in space and so was able to chalk up several space firsts, but they can only afford to design and test one rocket booster design. They don't have any other kinds. So now to keep one-upping their rivals in space, they must land a man on the Mun.
I said land. I didn't say come back. They don't have the technological capacity to bring him back. Our 'volunteer' astronaut is a condemned convict who has graciously accepted the offer not to face the firing squad and instead become a space hero. However, they don't mean to just leave him there to die: before his landing attempt, they are going to have to find a way to land a space habitat with supplies on the Mun to support an extended stay, and they will probably land a number of additional supply ships and other toys for him to play with over time, in the hopes that one day they might have the funds to design a new booster and bring him home.
In this episode, a new nation enters the Space Race and makes a deal with the UKKR: if we can get to the Mun first, will you let our cosmonaut/convict share the space habitat with your cosmonaut/convict until we can get them home? The UKKR takes one look at their minivan-sized rocket and agrees, never once thinking they could actually make it. But can they? Will the UKKR be upstaged in their attempt to be the first on the Mun?
