LaserDisc TBC Repair with an FPGA
This is a bit of information about repairs done to a LaserDisc player with a broken digital timebase correction (TBC) circuit. The TBC's buffer element is an MN4760S 9x910 bit FIFO memory, though only 8 bits are used in this unit. A replacement chip could not be found, so it was replaced with an FPGA mimicking its functionality.
Diagrams about the LaserDisc player are taken from the service manual of the Pioneer LD-S2. This is not the same unit that was repaired but is very similar internally. A great description of the timebase correction circuit is available on pdf page 114. Domesday86.com is also another good resource for technical information about LaserDiscs.
The board itself was made as a polyimide FPC with a thin FR-4 stiffener underneath the IC area, manufactured by ALLPCB.
