Sentences with "(으)ㅂ시다" at the end of a word show that a sentence is in the formal polite style. This style is typically used for formal and public situations. The reason for using this style was difficult to understand at first because we don't really use it in English, or so I thought. But, imagine you're writing an email to your employer, you're giving a presentation, or speaking to your partner's parents for the first time. We would instinctively try and be more formal or polite, and if we spoke in this manner to our close friends or family, it would seem strange. The same seems to be for Korean and this is when we would use "(으)ㅂ시다" to show that we are being formal and polite when we are making a suggestion or agreeing with a suggestion.

Here are some of the rules for using it:
1. If a word ends in a consonant (e.g. 먹, eat), we add 읍시다 at the end (e.g. 먹읍시다).
2. If a word ends in a vowel (e.g. 가, go), we add ㅂ under the word and end it off with 시다 (e.g. 갑시다).
3. Sentences end in (으)ㅂ시다 when we are suggesting something (e.g. let's eat?)

So when you hear "시다" know that someone is making a suggestion and that they are being formal and polite.

Examples in this video:
