Learn Korean with KDramas | Learn the Sentence Style: 습니다 (formal polite, declaring something)
4Sentences with "습니다" (sounds like "seubnida" ) at the end of a word show that a sentence is in the formal polite style. This style is typically used for formal and public situations. The reason for using this style was difficult to understand at first because we don't really use it in English, or so I thought. But, imagine you're writing an email to your employer, you're giving a presentation, or speaking to your partner's parents for the first time. We would instinctively try and be more formal or polite, and if we spoke in this manner to our close friends or family, it would seem strange. The same seems to be for Korean and this is when we would use "습니다" to show that we are being formal and polite.
Here are some of the rules for using it:
1. If a word ends in a consonant (e.g. 먹, eat), we add 습니다 at the end (e.g. 먹습니다).
2. If a word ends in a vowel (examples not included in this video) (e.g. 가, go), we add ㅂ under the word and end it off with 니다 (e.g. 갑니다).
3. Sentences end in 니다 when we are declaring something, that it is, to say it as a fact (e.g. there is a dog).
So when you hear "습니다" know that someone is stating something and that they are being formal and polite.
