Learn To Listen - Ambient Composition With Cujo Sound. Part I.
Learn to Listen with Cujo Sound is a series of videos about listening.
In this video I will go over an analogue recordin technique that allows you to "record" over a timeline the ambience around you.
This is actually a method to write down the timeline and then perform the sounds in order again - creating a link between the seemingly arbitrary sounds of the environment around you and the written down sheet of music that will come out of it.
You do not have to play the sounds as you hear them, the importance is the representation in the end result.
Sit alone or in a group and write down EVERY sound around you on a timeline. All your scribblings can be confusing, so write a clean sheet of the timeline again - either perform it or create it again in some other way.
I use this technique to describe "what is music" but also as a technique to concentrate about what is around you. Learning about how your environment actually sounds will help you be much better at creating artificial environments that in a much more trustworthy way first the environment you are trying to create.
We can discuss audio ecology and it's preservation from here to eternity, but especially in videogames where the environment and everything in it is artificial, the soundscape is usually better off being so as well.
Use this as a way to think about what you need to add to make your created soundscape trustworthy and not seem out of place.
