An uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2 is finally coming to Australia, for the PC. Prior to getting the sweet, sweet R18+ rating allowed in the country, Left 4 Dead 2 had to be launched as a super censored MA15+ version. It had all the good stuff cut out, like decapitation and limb dismemberment. I mean, what was the point, really? All I’ve ever wanted in life was to decapitate a zombie… Is that weird?

It was actually horribly glitchy on launch as result of some of these half-assed modifications as well, but the original, uncensored version of the game was illegal to sell, rent or promote in any way within country, so Australians didn’t have much of a choice. Now, however, the game is being re-classified in Australia as R18+, and so the uncensored version is set to release. The new classification includes warnings for mild impact language, strong impact themes and high impact violence.

Apparently Valve actually resubmitted the game to the Australian Classification Board themselves, and a Valve representative said:

“We are delighted that the full version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be available to fans age 18+ in Australia. We are making plans to deliver that version to those who have already purchased the game. We will announce more details on that soon.”

So, I should mention that no one has explicitly said that the re-release will be completely free of censorship, but the use of the phrase “full version” there is pretty close to confirmation. It’s also just cool to hear that there’s some kind of plan in place for people who already bought the game – maybe a free upgrade? Because I happen to be one of those people and I also happen to like free upgrades, so, I’m sensing a connection here. It’s a sign.
