Nintendo have revealed two new 3DS models, with new designs and internal tweaks, including updated CPUs and built in NFC support. Even though the new consoles are just like updated versions of 3DS and the 3DS XL – quite like the original DS and the DSi – the screens are bigger, the buttons have changed colours, there’s a little second directional stick for easier camera controls and there are two new buttons on the back. I particularly like the change of the X Y A B buttons – certainly seems familiar. Hashtag SNES.

The actual CPU upgrade means that, aside from things like the eShop running a bit faster, certain games will only be coming to the new versions of the 3DS and 3DS XL, namely, the newly announced Xenoblade Chronicles. Yup, 3DS or 2DS owners will not be able to play the upcoming Xenoblade port, which I feel is kinda harsh for anyone who has recently bought a 2DS. I mean, it only came out last year, and there’s already a game coming out that it can’t play. Ouch. That said, you can always get Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii so it’s not the worst news ever.

Both the new consoles and the New 3DS Xenoblade Chronicles have only been announced for Japan so far, though, with a Nintendo of America representative saying:

“We have no plans to launch these products in the Americas this year.”

Which is a real shame, if you ask me, because these new consoles are officially titled the ‘New 3DS’ and the ‘New 3DS XL’ which is going to be so, so funny at retail. Did you want a new 3DS or a New 3DS? Or a used New 3DS? No, the 3DS can’t play New 3DS games, but it can play new 3DS games, and used 3DS games, and we have some used New 3DS games too, but only a New 3DS can play those. Shout-out to all the GameStop employees who have to explain that one to parents – have fun.
