Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p - Far Cry 4 Performance Test
Probably the best AAA game we've seen yet from Ubisoft this year (mostly in terms of optimization). Unlike other recent Ubi outings that shall remain anonymous (*cough* ACU *cough*), FC4 doesn't suffer from bad graphics scaling. To be fair, while FC4 is open world it doesn't have a billion things happening on-screen at once, like in ACU. If anything, it runs just about as well as FC3, where the gap would likely thin as better gaming PC setups are used. I die a little inside when I can't set something on Ultra. :(
In my experience with FC4, the biggest offenders (AKA performance killers) are the shadow and lighting effects. The others not so much. Changing any of them exhibits a noticeable difference in overall gaming performance. Personally, I decided to dial down the shadows to the minimum because I couldn't give up the lighting on Ultra once I've seen it, and shadows on Low still look okay. For the best results (a balance between quality and performance, at least for me), set everything to High, except Textures, Shadows, Post FX, and Lighting. I think turning Fur off also helps a little.
If you couldn't take the framerate hiccups, you can dial the Textures down to High, too. Ultra textures slightly exceeded the 2 GB of VRAM in 768p on my end. Although the video shows much of that, I think it's probably due to the memory clock being reduced a bit. Think running Shadowplay in the background also made that worse.
Now, if only they could add something like a smart motion blur, I'll be good to go.
Maximum Operating Temperatures (1 hour of gaming):
CPU - 86 to 89 °C
GPU - 87 °C
