HAWKEN - Scout: The Slippery Little Troublemaker
The Scout is a Class A (Light) mech and my absolute favorite. It's the second lightest in all of HAWKEN, with just 5 more armor value than the Technician. It's basically one of the fastest mechs the game has to offer, and it packs a punch, too -- which is why it's labeled as a hit-and-run mech -- it gets in hard and gets out quickly when in a pinch. The Scout also has one of the smallest fuel tanks in the game, but not to worry. Its special ability, "Fuel Reserves", can replenish its fuel when needed. Either use it to put some good distance between you and your pursuer or chase a fleeing enemy before it could repair itself.
As a Scout, cover is your best friend. It can pop out of cover to deal heavy damage and get swiftly back in to safety. The Scout thrives in cover-heavy maps with limited aerial space, like Prosk, Wreckage, and Origin. With its fast walk speed, the Scout is excellent for flanking enemies (keeps you off the radar, too). Just sneak behind hostiles, fire heavy shots, and then escape to your allies as needed. Because of what the Scout is capable, it can be one of the most annoying mechs you can face in combat, especially at the hands of a good player.
The Scout can use the Mini Flak Cannon (starter), Flak Cannon (purchasable at Rank 3), and the Heat Cannon (purchasable at Rank 5) as its prestige weapon. The Mini Flak is an automatic shotgun that demands close-quarters firefights to be effective. The Flak Cannon is a slightly more powerful Mini Flak that also requires close-quarters, but with a lower rate of fire. The Heat Cannon is kind of like a secondary TOW Rocket that travels a bit slower than the TOW, but double its speed when charged.
As someone who plays on the US East Coast servers, but lives on the other side of the world (300 ms ping, anyone?), the Heat Cannon on the Scout is a godsend. I struggled with the Mini Flak thanks to my ping and never bothered with the Flak, since I'm pretty sure it would work about the same. Although, I heard the Flak is what the pros use, so I might try it when I earn some extra HC. Had to rely a lot on splash damage with the Heat. It's all about timing, really. And when both Heat and TOW shots hit, the damage is quite monstrous, which could leave the enemy flustered.
