1988's Aleste for Sega Master System is the instantiating game of the Aleste series, though it feels in every way like a sequel to the previous year's Zanac. Similarly to Zanac, the game feels largely programmatic and procedural, which recurrent waves of the same few types of enemies at increasing density as the player survives longer and powers up. A few midbosses and iconic turret walls bookmark intervals in the stage progression, but after simplifying out the equipment system (by sticking with the infinite-ammo Type 1 shot) it's a mostly monotonous endurance test, albeit a fun one. If this had taken more than a day or two of practice I'd have lost interest quickly, but in short bursts to return to over a long period of time (as one would in console days), it's a hectic blast of energy.
I practiced 1 hour the day before and 1 hour the day of before completing this run. After switching to the Type 1-only strategy, the 1LC came almost immediately.
