MUSHIHIMESAMA (Madam Bug Princess??) is at its core the most classically-styled of Cave's STGs. Original Mode uses simple kill-the-enemies, pick-up-the-gems scoring, with bullet cancels as only an occasional event. Thus each segment, stage, and boss is allowed to stand on its own six legs without the persistent convolution of chaining. Dynamic difficulty is balanced to soften the blow of each death, without any skyrocketing rank ceiling to punish the player for surviving too long.

Fast, aimed bullets rarely accumulate for longer than a couple seconds, allowing (and requiring) the player to persistently renew their situational awareness and quickly adapt to even minor mistakes. This steady current of (relatively) low-density attacks likewise preempts the ever-maligned "Cave slowdown", that element which makes their games so inconsistent to play and difficult to port. This is especially true when using the S-type character, a natural counter for the speedy enemies and one which allows the game to run mostly smoothly throughout.
