Technosoft's ELEMENTAL MASTER is a true shooting classic for Genesis / Mega Drive, released 6 months after Thunder Force 3 in December of 1990. It has finally received a well-deserved re-release on the Sega Genesis Mini 2, which was used to record this run. Its graphics and music speak for themselves, and the game runs excellently on the hardware, with none of the slowdown seen in later Thunder Force games. (sadly the game is ONLY featured on the *Genesis* Mini 2, NOT the Mega Drive equivalent, making a strong case for anyone interested to buy the former).

Design-wise, this is a vertical take on the 5-weapon Thunder Force formula, with a 7-stage campaign comparable to contemporary Mega Man games. It features 2-button, 2-directional shooting, a control scheme that became a minor trope on Genesis (seen also in Chelnov and Ranger X), as well as a unique charge shot for each weapon (again recalling Mega Man). Stage and boss designs are reminiscent of Thunder Force 3 and 4, with frequent environmental hazards, a leaning towards heavy enemies over popcorn, and simple boss fights structured around fast movement and small target points. Instead of a lives/extends system, the game uses hit points with recovery items and no extra lives.

I failed to mention in the commentary (because I failed to notice at all) that the fairy subweapon gained in Stage 2 is lost after Stage 5, when the Light Element is powered up.
