Let's Play Age of Empires: The Age of Kings Part 5
This mission is strange because I do not know what triggers the enemy's retreat. All in all, this mission isn't very difficult because the enemy doesn't have enough troops to put pressure on the player. In the real Battle of Arsuf, Saladin's army harassed the crusaders in an attempt to frustrate them and get them to break ranks. The crusader army refused to be provoked until finally Garnier de Nablus, the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller, ordered his knights to charge. It is important to note that the Knights Hospitaller's unit was starting to lose cohesion and their crossbowmen were in danger of being isolated.
The established viewpoint is that Nablus action was a breach of discipline in disobedience of Richard's orders. However, modern scholars have challenged this view and now believe that Richard I gave authority to trusted subordinates to counterattack if they spotted the opportunity for it. Either way, Nablus's charge forced Richard I to order the rest of his knights to charge, elsewise The Knights Hospitaller and French knights that followed them would have been isolated and destroyed by Saladin's army. The resulting charge routed the Saracen force, and Richard prudently halted the charge and regrouped his army, before charging the Saracens two more times to scatter their army.
