Let's Play Black Mesa #58: Puzzles? In my Endgame?
This is a blind playthrough. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
One of the lesser reasons that Half-Life was such a revolutionary game when it came out was that it wasn’t just about blasting aliens. There were plenty of enemies to do battle with, sure, but there were also puzzles that blocked your forward progress that had to be solved. Be it a locked door, collapsed passageway, chasms or a machine that needed turning on, the environment around you is as much your enemy as the actual enemies. Said puzzles were great at providing points of rest between intense combats and adding variety to a game that otherwise might have become rather samey and bland.
The puzzles haven’t ended in Xen and the strange alien facilities we’re found ourselves in have been full of conundrums to solve, ranging from plugging things in to overload pistons, blowing up walls and finding the right path through the vent systems. As we’re now in the endgame we’re facing off against some of the trickiest and most deadly puzzles but we’ve also been given a source of infinite ammunition in the form of the green crystals which power up our gluon gun. I don’t think they built those with our weapons in mind but I’m not going to complain about not having to worry about running out of juice for the mightiest weapon in my arsenal.
