Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is a 2008 real-time strategy games developed by EA Los Angeles and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released for Windows on October 28, 2008, and later received releases for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and OS X. It is the third main entry in the Red Alert series.
The game retains most of the gameplay of its predecessors, and once more revolves around a worldwide war between the Soviet Union and the Allies, as well as a new faction, the Empire of the Rising Sun. The latter's rise to power was caused by an attempt to save the USSR via time travel, as described in two Red Alert spin-off games later released for Java-based phones and iOS devices.
The factions of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 differ in their base setup mechanics: the Soviets build structures directly on the field, the Allies re-build them as in previous Red Alert game, and the Japanese construct cores that unfold into structures. Tech-up mechanics differ between factions as well, and each faction has a different focus: land for the Soviets, air for the Allies, and naval for the Empire.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3's singleplayer campaign has full co-op mode, allowing the player to either play it with a friend, or alongside an AI. Playing just by themselves is not possible, but human players can give their AI co-commander limited orders. After the official servers for the game shut down, multiplayer and co-op gameplay was kept alive by fan via C&C Online.
The game's Xbox and PlayStation 3 ports bring back the command wheel from Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath, and largely use the same controls. New additions are a command menu for the player's AI co-commander, zooming for the minimap, and swift camera movement via the latter. Unit grouping was revised once more, is now limited to fewer groups, and even fiddlier to execute.
The game received mostly positive reviews. Multiplayer and cooperative gameplay were lauded alongside the focus on naval combat. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 would later receive a standalone expansion pack, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising, as well as two mobile spin-off games.
