Let's Play Doom - E1M5 - Phobos Lab
We get to be scientists and think out complex puzzles such as how many shots it takes to gib an Imp. We shoot things, they die, science. And they say Doom isn't a thinking game. Anyway, this level never really left an impression on me. It just manages to be very uninteresting while using one of the duller songs of the game. It isn't even a problem of being too long, it just is a case where it never had any impact.
This level introduces us to the Radiation Suit, a powerup that isn't counted as a pickup and thus every single one will not be taken, but is useful for crossing hazardous waste such as Slime since the chance to get injured is extremely low with it being worn. It also tints our screen green to tell us it is being activated, once its timer runs out the screen goes back to normal and we can be injured again.
One of the secrets of this level also introduces us to the Computer Map. This thing basically maps the entirety of the level for us, meaning that we get to see not only where we have explored in the normal green, but get a blue coloration to areas we haven't seen. This is great when trying to find where you haven't been yet if you get lost. This one stays with the player until the end of the level, making it quite useful.
Near the end we also find a Light Amplification Visor. Another limited time powerup that tints the screen green, this one lights up dark areas so that you can see things a lot easier for a bit of time. This Powerup is quite important in Doom, since most of the game is dark, as otherwise you tend to fumble around in the darkness while hoping for the best.
