Let's Play The Elder Scrolls Arena - Part 10 - A Talking Chest
Having received a vision about the Labarynthian being where the second piece of the Staff of Chaos is, we begin our quest in the most expedient way possible. By spending an hour selling random junk from Fang Lair and getting ridiculously rich!
Not much of importance for the first hour, just the usual slow-paced natured of the bartering system as I try to get the best deals possible for each piece of equipment. By this point everyone by Nexus has left, though Dominus Mortem does come on for a few minutes, and by the time we make progress we have lost all viewers. I think it safe to say that it isn't entertaining to watch this, it probably is as fun as playing it (meaning it is groan-worthy). Still, I like to keep my videos whole to show the pains I endured, including sheer tedium. Just remember you have the ability to skip parts of a video or even entire parts, while I had to endure this frustrating shop system.
I do wonder how my character will work in later game areas, I can't use plate armor which in turn means I cannot have enchanted armor. Almost every place I recall reading (I often would look at things on level with where I was in the game back then) recommended that you go with a Redguard or Nord Warrior. As you progress, mages get stronger to the point that they are ridiculously overpowered, while the aforementioned choices are great for the starter areas. Thief-based classes are apparently supposed to be for challenge (up until now I didn't really realize why, though with the noticeable power of spells and the lack of good armor it is starting to make sense), I don't recall anybody trying to play using any of them, so we might be in for a real struggle when combined with my lack of RP knowledge.
The good news is that I got a potion of levitation to compliment my potion of invisibility that I got from the Stonekeep. We also identify a bunch of my jewelry, wasting money for the sake of having something to spend it on. We also identify the Longsword to be one of Firestorm.
Originally planning to sell my new sword, I realize that it is worth more than 10000 gold. So I decide to test it out by wandering around the town. Initially I have a lot of bad luck, not finding anything to kill, before Jagar Tharn shows up and tells us that he is sending something to kill us to reclaim the staff piece we have. This thing turns out to be a Troll! One thing I know about Trolls, at least based on assumptions from classic DnD, is that they regenerate and so combat would be useless unless you can prevent them from regenerating. Our Firestorm one-shots it, as it does a Ghoul, which convinces me that keeping this will be extremely intelligent.
The bad news is that both of my Longswords cost a lot to repair, especially my Firestorm with its 1600 charges. I probably will only really bother when they start to get close to being broken or become broken, I think the cost is the same and it just isn't worth repairing it for a few charges after every dungeon. It definitely holds enough charges for me to get through whatever I need at the moment.
The end of this video showcases my adventure to Skyrim, where I learn the general look of various buildings. Going initially to the wrong town, we travel to Winterhold to reach it in the midst of a blizzard. We also get a random quest (you can get these by questioning townsfolk, but the reward just doesn't seem worth my time) to go to the Mage's Guild, where we are going anyway (though I forget to return to the Inn, something I will hopefully remember in the next part and fix before it expires). We also check out a bunch of weapon shops that have nothing of interest.
The Mage's Guild basically tells us that they would like to help us, but we need to get a MacGuffin from a dungeon to decipher the Elder Scrolls to tell us where the dungeon with the Staff Piece is. Sound extremely familiar? For some reason I get the feeling we will be doing this for every staff piece, meaning possibly 14 dungeons we will need to venture through. If you thought we had made it far into the game, think again, there is a lot more to go. The place in question is called the Fortress of Ice.
I remember one thing about the Fortress of Ice. Wolves... lots of wolves... howling as they destroy me with ease with their frost spells. I never managed to make it past the first corridor of the Fortress of Ice, so we are practically at the point where everything will be new content for me. Let us hope for better luck this time, though I might need to work on my stats (and hunt for some more gear) some more before I can face them properly.
I was apparently getting sloppy at the end, I forgot to save my place as "End of Stream". Luckily, looking at the video was all I needed to determine which save I ended on, I have saved into the proper area so I do not load the wrong one in confusion. Hopefully I will remember to finish the quest, though 40 gold is mere pennies for me so it is no big deal if it is lost.
