188Not all objects you can take in games have a purpose. In games with unlimited inventories this isn’t a problem most of the time, but there are a couple of exceptions: Some items turn out to be detrimental to have a certain points, other times the act of taking it has consequences. In games with limited inventory, useless items are there as traps for unsuspecting players to fall victim to, lugging around pointless things instead of items that are critical to success. But what items are useful and which are best left behind? You can make judgement calls based on the type of game you’re playing and its tone, but you can never truly know just what won’t be needed until you complete the game or its taken from you during an event.
Just thinking about all this has reminded me of the unstable ordinance from Space Quest IV. The less said about that, the better.
Rare is it when a game straight up tells you that an item is entirely useless, however. One instance of that is Arrant Prac, the result of combining items incorrectly in Lands of Lore 2 and 3 which can also be found in a few places. It has no combat application, is needed to solve no puzzles, can’t be traded for anything and tastes terrible. At least the name is a not-so-subtle hint as to its usefulness, a hint we don’t need in this game as it’s decided to blatantly tell us. Well, if they’re going to outright tell me it has no purpose, that obviously means that it must do and they’re trying to fool me otherwise, right?
I’m wise to your games, game. You’ve thrown down the gauntlet and so I’ll prove you wrong. I WILL find a use for this item and when I do, who’ll be laughing? Most likely you, but I won’t back down from the challenge!
