Let’s Play BG2 EE #92: Sewer Spelunking Once More
101If there’s one place in the game that you return to a lot, it’s Athkatla. Certain regions of the city are revisited more often than others – the promenade most of all – but you wouldn’t think that the sewers beneath the Temple District would be one of them. That area is used for far more than the quest to deal with the beholder revering cult, hiding the secret mind flayer hideout and being the location of the ominous tomb that we were warned to never, ever open. Adding to the list is the fact that the hideout of the wizard who kidnapped the performer we’re seeking can only be accessed through the dark, dingy sewers and you’ve got a veritable quest crossroads that you’ll be going through at least once in any playthrough.
The wizard himself shouldn’t be too difficult to handle as it’s one of the quests suitable for an incomplete group of adventurers at the very beginning of chapter two. The same can’t be said for some of the monsters he keeps around to protect his home. While there are set encounters, I believe it uses your party level to determine what enemies it’ll generate when a ‘random’ encounter is called for and we’re far higher level than we should be at this point of the game. While they’re unlikely to be something the party can’t handle, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that the game can throw a curveball at you that can catch you off guard.
