Let’s Play BG2 EE #93: The Problem with Portals
Many and varied are the ways to travel the planes in D&D, with some being far less predictable and/or safe than others. By far the safest and most reliable method is to use portals, be they naturally occurring or created by a wizard after a long period of study and careful preparation. Such magical conduits allow people to quickly and effectively travel to almost anywhere on the Great Wheel or within the plane you’re already on; never discount how useful a portal that acts like teleport can be, especially if it’s your ticket out of your stronghold when it’s being invaded. Most portals require an activation method of some kind, the more typical of which are passwords or items attuned to the portal. Other portals have more peculiar conditions for them working, like the time of year, the alignment or faith of whoever is trying or even odder requirements, like their favourite cheese, but they’re far rarer.
Unfortunately for us, we’re not going to be dealing with any of the more stable and safer portals in this video. The troupe of performers we’ve helped out seek to spirit themselves away from this plane and while their method of doing so works, it’s… far from exact and not without peril. The party are used to peril at this point but not of the kind the troupe are going to attract with the use of powerful portal magic.
Oh, just in case you’re wondering, the chances we’ll have a stake in this mess are roughly 100% as we’re the protagonist of the game, though we can choose to discard it along with the experience and loot that’s on offer. I’m sure you can guess the chances that we’ll say not say no to experience and loot and yes, it’s 100% too.
