Let’s Play Generation Zero Multiplayer | It’s Like Left 4 Dead Meets Horizon Zero Dawn
We’ve been playing the Generation Zero beta and in multiplayer it’s just like Left 4 Dead meets Horizon Zero Dawn (maybe with a bit of Dead Island thrown in for good measure). It’s about people hunting robots in 1980s Sweden across a huge open world map. Here’s some Generation Zero gameplay to show how co-op looks and feels. Enjoy!
Matthew and Alice go exploring and try to solve some of the Generation Zero story missions, which mainly means running away from robot dogs and getting scared by mechanical head crabs. We always hated those things in Half-Life and they’re just as unpleasant here. There’s also a bit where Matthew shot some mashed potato because it reminded him of what he can’t eat on his current diet. We offer some Generation Zero impressions as we go along, but I will warn you that we’re easy distracted by the 1980s fashion and the weird collection of boomboxes in Alice’s pockets.
It’s a bit like Left 4 Dead, a bit like Horizon Zero Dawn, but it has a feel of its own as you’ll see in this Let’s Play Generation Zero multiplayer adventure. Generation Zero is made by Avalanche Studios, they of lots of things blowing up in Just Cause and Mad Max fame. The explosions here are pretty amazing, but what really surprised us is the way they’ve taken the tech from Hunter: Call of the Wild and built 1980s Sweden with it. Four people can join up to hunt robots - here Matthew and Alice work together - but even by yourself there’s something to be said for shooting off robot dogheads in the serene forests.
If we were to rate the beta, our Generation Zero review would be ‘good robot dog explosions, but needs much more polish’. But that’s fine, as that’s what betas are for, right? At the moment the interface is fiddly, the menus sluggish and some of the objectives a bit vague - and the items need balancing, as you can end up with a rucksack too full of bullets to pick up guns, which feels slightly off. But the robot explosions are meaty and the reuse of the hunting game knowledge is cleverly done. Just being in the world is fun.
