We now come to Crystal Snail's stage, which is one of my favorites from this game and certainly has my favorite music. (In fact, Crystal Snail's stage music might be my favorite of any in the SNES MMX games.) The Energen Crystal stage is full of shiny and sparkly things...and spikes, awkwardly-placed enemies, a sub-boss, and one of the most annoying powerups to obtain in the game. There is another Ride Armor here, though, as well as the helmet upgrade (which is, admittedly, fairly useless). The stage isn't that hard, though, and it is fairly interesting and fun. It doesn't hurt that you can mostly just pound everything into scrap with the Ride Armor for most of the first half of the stage. Crystal Snail himself actually doesn't shoot anything except the Crystal Hunter, which encases you in crystal (mash the controller buttons to break free) but does not deal any damage. That doesn't mean he's an easy boss, though...he likes to spend a lot of time in his shell, where he is completely invulnerable and all too happy to jet forward and ram you. Later in the battle, he can also perform this attack that basically puts everything except him into bullet time, making him even harder to dodge. He gives you the Crystal Hunter when defeated, which is similar to his own weapon: it will encase most enemies that it hits in crystal. You can then stand on that block of crystal, which is required to get one heart tank and, if memory serves, beat one of the fortress stages. His weakness weapon is Magna Centipede's weapon. Also making an appearance in this stage is Serges, the leader of the X-Hunters, who is just as annoying as Violen was, if not more. He floats around on a little hovercraft-like contraption, drops mines, puts up a force field, and somersaults in the air firing off a spiral of green projectiles. There is a lot going on in Serges's boss battle, and unless you're really good at dodging, you WILL need Sub-Tanks. His weakness is the Speed Burner from Flame Stag, although it's not all that effective anyway.
