In the fourth Maverick stage, we find mountains to climb and lava to jump over. Yeah, this is the fire stage of MMX2, because no game would be complete without one. In fact, the only Mega Man X game that doesn't have a fire/lava stage of some kind is X3. Flame Mammoth in X1, Magma Dragoon in X4, Burn Dinorex in X5, Blaze Heatnix in X6, Flame Hyenard in X7, Burn Rooster in X8...and, of course, this one in X2. This is Flame Stag's stage, the Volcanic Zone. It starts out with a vertical climb where you have to outrun lava rising through the volcano. The lava does not kill you instanly, but it does a LOT of damage. It's also nigh impossible to get the heart tank in this stage without the lava catching up to you. After that, though, things settle down, and you're faced with floating platforms that sink into lava, followed by another vertical section with flammable gas that a wall-jumping lizard enemy sets on fire. That's actually all there is to the stage, in fact...the Volcanic Zone is really quite a short stage. Then there's Flame Stag himself. He's one of those bosses that can be easy or hard depending on how easily you can react to and manipulate his pattern. I have a habit of reading him wrong or just standing in the wrong place a lot of the time, so I did die the first time fighting him. He jumps from wall to wall, up and then back down, and when he's on the ground, he can either throw fireballs at you in pairs, perform a flaming dash forward, or dash up the wall. The vertical dash is kind of hard to see coming and easy to get caught by, and honestly, I still haven't figured out a good way to avoid one of his two dash attacks without setting myself up to get nailed by the other. With persistence, though, he should go down soon enough. His special weapon is the Speed Burner, which shoots a large twin fireball forward. This is one of the most significant weapons in the game, because its charged effect makes you perform a flaming air-dash forward, which is necessary to get some of the items in the game (at least four!).
