Stage 3, Fire Grotto, is probably one of the more interesting and fun ones in this game. It's basically an underground area full of fire and lava, and to add to the fun, you get a new outfit: the fireman suit, which allows you to shoot water at stuff, such as blocks and enemies. (Water will outright destroy most of the enemies in this level, since they're made out of fire.) The breakdown of stage 3 is more or less:
- 3-1: Mostly vertical; a sort of elevator shaft in a cave with spikes on the ceiling. The midboss is here rather than in 3-2 as you'd expect it to be.
- 3-2: The best example of the theme of the stage. This one introduces the fireman suit and takes place in an open area with various fiery enemies and moving platforms.
- 3-3: This one adds moving blocks and water to the mix, and some of the fire moves as well.
- 3-4: The boss stage. There is essentially nothing here but the boss, which is a sort of fire-breathing round gargoyle surrounded by six platforms that rotate around it. It doesn't have a set amount of hits; you just have to spray it with the fire hose until it dies. It changes color twice at certain points, and the fire in its mouth will become smaller when it does this. Also, the platforms will reverse the direction of rotation the first time and increase their speed the second time. If you wait too long to spray the boss, it will gain power back.
