The dangers of the radiation areas are many but the main advantage of travelling through them is all the time that you save doing so. In this game the shortest distance between two points literally is a straight line as it doesn't consider things like mountain ranges or uncross-able rivers on the actual map even if obstacles as you travel can cause you to waste time. Compare the point we were at in the previous attempt to reach Safe Haven at our current mileage and you'll see that the brief jaunt into a deadly radiation fallout has proved to be to our benefit.

Now all we need to make good on that benefit so we can make it to Safe Haven with less chance of things going horribly wrong for us. By no means do I think we're out of the woods yet, there's plenty of chance for things to go horribly wrong. There is slightly less chance however as there's now less distance for it to go wrong in.
