Let's Play Neverwinter Nights 149: Conversing with Dragons
A general rule of thumb in D&D settings when you encounter dragons is that if they don't instantly try to kill you it's generally a good idea to be courteous. A number of dragons consider themselves superior to non dragons and so speaking to them as if they can go a way to making them reconsider killing you.
It's easier to do this with the metallic dragons as they tend to be of good alignment. Being polite and truthful is often greatly appreciated and as long as you have a good reason for being where you are and mean them no harm you can often avoid a conflict. Some simply want to have a conversation, learn about local events or hear stories while some can even be convinced to help in a local matter or two. With the chromatic dragons it's quite different however; flattery and asserting that they are superior are your best bet and even then it's not guaranteed. You may have to give up some treasure in 'tribute' if you're unlucky but if the alternative is death most people will take that.
That said, we're not here to kill dragons at least as far as we know. We have some hill giants that we need to take care of and they're apparently in this area. If the dragons in the area know about that then perhaps we can get some information from them if we're lucky.
