Taking care of a baby in the Sims is not as difficult as you'd think, at least at a cursory glance. When the baby cries you need to tend to its needs until it stops, guessing which one it requires. There's no way to tell which one is the right one, so trial and error is required. The actions take up a fair bit of time and the crying will wake up any sim who's asleep in the room. If you ignore the baby for long enough, someone will come to take them away.

The difficulties come about when you realise that you have to have a sim in the household at all times else the baby will be neglected. Very rarely you'll have two sims with work schedules so out of sync with one another that one of them will be at home at any time, but it's more likely that you'll need them to take alternate days off to avoid them getting fired. This means a reduced income for the time that you're tending to the baby but the alternative is far worse.

Hiring a butler can alleviate some of the problem but they're expensive and are only on duty for a certain part of the day. Having a third adult in the household without a job is the ideal solution, but Dave and Yvette don't have that option. It'll be a lot of work but they love their son and that love will shine through in the diligent and prompt care they give him as he grows.

At least the very comfortable sofa is in another room, away from Jim. That's some inadvertently clever room design right there.
