And so Earth is safe at last. The story that has taken two games to reach the conclusion has ended and although humanity has lost much they can finally rebuild and recover. With the advancement they've made perhaps once day they will travel the stars themselves and meet some of alien species of the galaxy on friendlier terms. If things go wrong they'll be ready for that too; after all, there's always Gaston and Keith if things go wrong.

But is that the true end of the story? Is there perhaps something else going on somewhere in the solar system that we haven't yet seen? After all, the reticulans did promise humanity a new home...

UFO Aftershock is a game I really enjoy although I think the first game in the series had a better atmosphere. I'm not sure if it was the graphics style or the general mood of the story but Aftermath struck a better chord with me as it was a truly bleak situation that humanity had to cope with and attempt to prevail against. Still for Aftershock's shortcomings there was a lot it did well, improving on the combat engine of the first and providing a lot of variety in the foes you face. While Aftermath forced you use a variety of different weapons to deal with your foes effectively - until you got a collapsible machine gun or two of course - Afterschock has a lot of depth in it's weapon and ammunition types you can completely ignore on normal difficulty. As long as you have a mixture of ballistic and energy weapons you'll pretty much do okay for the whole game which is a shame, especially when AP rounds are some of the best you can use with a few exceptions. I also feel that the music didn't set the same kind of tone as the original but the tone is a general thing with Aftershock that, while not the same as it's predecessor, still doesn't stop me from liking it.

What DOES potentially stop this game from being good are the bugs. This game has quite a few bad bugs and some of them can break the game, rendering it unwinnable. Without the unofficial 1.3 patch my let's play might very well have ended in failure from the pillars of death bug. The game does have the feeling of being a little rushed which would explain why the bugs remained. That the game has stuck with me all this time is a testament to how good it is despite all it's shortcomings and I'd still recommend that people give it a try, especially if they've played the first.

So, what's next for the Sunday slot? There is a third game to this franchise but I have to admit that it didn't mesh with me very well. Even more is changed and I personally feel like that many of those changes aren't for the better. That said, I won't eliminate the possibility that I'll return to that game at some point and give it another look but it's one I never completed and didn't have an urge to at the time. As for the Sunday slot I have a definite idea of what's to come, a return to a game series I've already explored in part before but that I didn't start from the beginning.

For now, I think it's time for the soldiers of Aftershock to get some well deserved holiday. I wouldn't count the moon trip as a holiday, not many sights to see after all.

See you next Let's Play!
