If there’s one thing I’ve learned from creative works it’s that you should trust your gut when it tells you that a certain scientific endeavour is a bad idea. Be it creating a powerful yet unstable AI you want to put in control of military systems, poking about at a sinister alien artefact you found in the husk of a dead civilisation or, in the case of Half-Life, recklessly exploring an alien world that is incredibly hostile to human life. These things rarely end well in fiction and this game is no exception as you’ll soon discover.
Was it the UAC who kept pushing ever onward without heeding the warnings of the staff in Delta Labs or was it Betruger who secretly went far beyond his remit to the horror of the UAC board of directors? Considering how much of the scenery Betruger is consuming with his over-the-top evilness, it’s safe to assume it was the latter, not that that makes our situation any better. We can only hope that we won’t encounter the mad scientist again, though the chances of that are about zero considering that he’s currently the main antagonist.
